Learn More About Wisdom Teeth Removal:
Most of us are born with wisdom teeth. If your last dental visit has advised you that you have them and that they need removal, our practice at South Hill Comprehensive Dentistry can help. We’re capable of performing wisdom teeth extractions and will work with you to find the most affordable costs for your treatment. Having your wisdom teeth extracted can be a nerve wracking and scary experience, but we’re here to inform you that your procedure will be comfortable and pain-free.
Why Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
When our wisdom teeth come in, our mouths can have a difficult time making room for them to erupt fully. Wisdom teeth can become impacted, referring to when the wisdom tooth erupts at an angle alongside the back molars. While some people’s wisdom teeth come in at various stages, all problematic wisdom teeth should be removed to help prevent various problems from occurring. Impacted teeth can cause numerous issues when they’re not removed, including:
- Pericoronitis: Periocoronitis, also known as localized gum infection, often occurs around the wisdom tooth location. When the mouth lacks room for total eruption, the wisdom teeth can become irritated and infected, resulting in pain, bleeding, and difficulty chewing and swallowing.
- Cyst Formation: When impacted teeth begin to develop, cysts also form, filling with liquid and expanding along the back of the mouth. These cysts slowly grow and can make treating wisdom teeth complicated if they are not removed soon. Cysts can, in rare cases, also develop into tumors.
- Teeth Crowding: In many cases, wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding, causing the front teeth to protrude. This condition usually occurs after the removal of braces.
- Adjacent Teeth Damage: If impacted at a certain angle, the tooth can attempt to grow into the adjacent teeth, causing damage to the enamel and dentin protecting the tooth’s pulp and nerves. As a result of this, gum disease, bone loss, and tooth decay become more prominent because of the damage.
Our Procedure For Wisdom Teeth Extraction:
At South Hill Comprehensive Dentistry, we offer multiple anesthesia options during your consultation to help maximize your comfort and perform the procedure as quickly as possible. By providing this service, we ensure optimum safety for our patients and utilize modern equipment to reduce unwanted side effects. Before performing the extraction, we will inform you of any instructions for post-operative pain and medications for treating your discomfort. The procedure will take between 30 to 60 minutes, and we recommend not eating or drinking for at least 6 to 7 hours before the procedure. Once your wisdom teeth are extracted, any sutures we use will dissolve within 3 to 5 days, and you can use prescription pain medication for pain relief after the anesthesia wears off
